No change on the top of the mountain, as UC Irvine’s dominant win at the UCSB Invitational has them as the first team to 3 wins. They again claim all 16 first-place votes. BYU, with their two wins over Hawaii, remain second, and if my math is correct, they got all 16 second-place votes.
Four ranked teams haven’t played yet — Pepperdine, Penn State, USC, and Cal State Northridge. They all move up a notch at the expense of the dreadful start for the Lewis Flyers. Somehow, they’re still in the rankings despite dropping all three of their matches at the UCSB tournament, slipping from #5 to #13.
Loyola and George Mason have dropped from the rankings, replaced by UC San Diego and Pacific, claiming the bottom two spots. It’s a fair reward for the Tritons knocking off Lewis and then pushing both UCLA and Long Beach State to the limit before falling in five to both. Maybe the MPSF hill for them isn’t as steep as I first thought. The Tigers enter the poll with their surprisingly easy straight-sets defeat of George Mason.
