Wisconsin hosted just three uncommitted prospects for the Maryland game this past weekend, and now they’ve landed verbal commitments from two of those three. On Monday, our recruiting partners at Badger247 report that 3-star defensive tackle Olive Sagapolu gave his verbal pledge to Wisconsin before leaving for home back in California.
Sagapolu became the 22nd player to commit to the Badgers in the 2015 class, and he joins fellow Santa Ana (Mater Dei), Cal. high school teammate Kyle Penniston as commits to Wisconsin for this class.
He chose the Badgers over offers from Kansas State and Washington State amongst others.
The 6-3, 295-pound senior defensive tackle is the Badgers’ first defensive tackle commit and the fourth defensive lineman to be added to the class. He is the No. 72-ranked defensive tackle, the No. 135-ranked player out of California and the No. 1,128-ranked player nationally according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
Given the loss of Warren Herring ahead of next season, the Badgers need the depth at defensive tackle.
Equally important is the beginnings of a Polynesian pipeline forming at Wisconsin. Last season it was the verbal pledge of Ula Tolutau out of Utah (who will join UW in the 2016 season after his church mission) and UW is in the thick of the battles for defensive tackle Elu Adyon and linebacker Christian Folau.
It’s an important pipeline to open up, as it could really transform the Badgers future on the defensive side of the ball especially. Adding those types of players can also really help to further foster the family atmosphere that exists at Wisconsin to begin with.
