4 Ejections and 10 Innings Later Sox Win Over Rays

There has always been a rivalry or more accurately bad blood between the Sox and Rays.  This is the first series since the benching kinda clearing skirmish last week involving Escobar, the Sox dugout and Jonny Gomes.  The Sox had Brandon Workman on the mound vs. David Price for the Rays.  The game would have some fireworks and ended with the Sox walking off in the 10th inning.

The Rays scored a run in the top of the first when Ben Zobrist hit an RBI groundout to score DeJesus.  In the bottom of the inning David Price hit Ortiz in a pitch that was clearly intentional.  The ump warmed both sides and that caused John Farrell to come out and complain and then be the first ejection of the night.  There would be fireworks again in the 4th inning when Price hit Mike Carp.  The ump rules that it was not intentional and Price got to remain in the game.  This caused the benches to clear and a lot of yelling from David Ortiz to David Price.  During the fray, the Sox acting manager Lovullo was ejection.  In the top of the 5th the Rays grabbed another run when DeJesus hit an RBI single to score Escobar.  Sox 0-2.  The Sox finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning when Papi hit an RBI single to score Bogaerts.

Ejections number 3 and 4 happened in the 6th inning when Brandon Workman threw a pitch behind Longoria.  Workman was ejected and the acting manger Brian Butterfield was sent with him.  Do I think Workman was trying to hit Longo?  Absolutely.  I think the rain caused the pitch to slip and he missed.  The Sox seemed livid that Price got to hit two batters and Workman was ejected for not hitting a Rays batter.  Badenhop came into the game and finished out the inning.  The Sox took that energy and tied the game up against David Price in the 7th when Bogaerts hit an RBI double to score Bradley Jr.  Sox 2-2.

Junichi Tazawa came out and pitched a scoreless 8th and Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless 9th before the game headed off to extra innings.  Edward Mujica took the mound in the 10th and got two outs before Miller came in to the game in relief.  Miller got the final out and the Sox offense took care of the game in the bottom of the inning.  Rays pitcher Oviedo hit Jonny Gomes by a pitch.  It was clear by his reaction that it was not intentional.  It would end up being the winning run though.  That was followed by AJ Pierzynski hit a walk off RBI triple in the center field corner to plate Jonny Gomes and have the Sox celebrating on the field.

Red Sox 3  Rays 2  F/10 BOXSCORE
