The Indians lost three in the four game series with Chicago after dropping Sunday’s rain-soaked and raw contest 4-3. It was another back and forth game as the lead changed hands several times. Both closers blew leads in the 9th and there were plenty of mental mistakes made by each team.
Player Of The Game
With the Indians starters ranking 12th in the American League with only 62 IP going into this game, Corey Kluber came through to deliver 7.1 quality innings and held the suddenly red-hot White Sox offense to just 2 ER’s on the day. He struck out 6 and did not walk a batter. The only HR he gave up was to Marcus Semien in the 8th inning.
Feathers Up
The Indians once again rallied in the top of the 9th inning to take the lead after entering the inning trailing by one run. The highest leveraged play during that inning occurred when Sox closer Matt Lindstrom threw a wild pitch runners on 3rd and 2nd, allowing an aggressive Yan Gomes to score.
Feathers Down
In that inning, Asdrubal Cabrera came up to bat with runners on 2nd and 3rd with only one out. He swung at the first pitch, a change-up on the outside part of the plate, and grounded out weakly to Abreu the 1st baseman. In the bottom half of that inning, tribe closer John Axford could not hold the lead in the bottom half of the 9th. He walked Jordan Danks, the leadoff hitter, which is never a good start to a half inning. After Danks stole 2nd on a close play, Alexei Ramirez hit a monster 2-run walk-off HR to left to send the Indians packing for Detroit.
On Deck
The Indians will begin a three game series with the Detroit Tigers starting on Tuesday, April 15th in Detroit as RHP Zach McAllister will face RHP Anibal Sanchez.
McAllister shut down the Padres in the first game of last Wednesday’s doubleheader, yielding no runs on five hits and no walks, while striking out seven in 7.2 innings. His appearances in Detroit have not been kind to him as he holds a career 4.30 ERA, 1.909 WHIP, and 12:8 K:BB in 14.2 innings at Comerica Park.
Sanchez pitched five innings and struck out six batters against the Dodgers Wednesday. He issued only one walk and allowed an earned run in the game. He also needed 110 pitches to get through those five innings.
No weather delays are to be expected. However, it will be cold as temperatures will only top out around 34 degrees.
