This Week in Baseball Cards: February 21

Spring Training is in full bloom…yet, for some reason, football is still on our minds.

Fascinating post recently about NFL stars drafted by baseball teams.  If you’re not familiar with it, the site Baseball Cube has all kinds of neat baseball trivia, like lists of NFL players drafted by the MLB and a listing of where every MLB draft pick when to high school. From that you can figure out which NFL stars played baseball with a future Major Leaguer.

Tom Brady, who has now lost two Super Bowls to the Giants, played baseball at Junipero Serra High with former Twins pitcher Dan Serafini. Brady was the Expos 18th round draft choice in 1995.

John Elway also lost a Super Bowl to the Giants. A second round draft choice of the Yankees in 1981 he was a high school baseball teammate of former Tigers infielder Doug Baker at Granada Hills High School, giving that team a Super Bowl and a World Series champ. He even played a year in the minor leagues, roaming the outfield with Dan Pasqua on the 1982 Oneonta Yankees.

Finally, some sad news this week, as Gary Carter passed away. As a Yankee fan growing up during the Mets dynasty, I naturally didn’t like Carter. However, in recent years, I had heard so many times how he was one of the nicest players in baseball.
