Former Houston Astro Lance Berkman who, quietly, was one of the National League’s best hitters over the last decade is heading back to the senior circuit after spending part of last season with the New York Yankees.
“We are extremely excited to have added Lance to our ballclub,” St. Louis Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak said in a statement. “He’s an impact player who not only helps solidify our everyday lineup, but he also brings a wealth experience to our team.”
“Fat Elvis” carries with him a career .296 hitter with 327 home runs and 1099 RBI in 1629 games. His career .409 on-base percentage is ranked fourth among active players and his .545 slugging mark ranks tenth.
He’s a five-time All-Star, has the National League record for the most RBI by a switch-hitter with 136 in 2006. Berkman has hit at least 25 homers in eight seasons and knocked in more than 100 runs six times.
The 34 year old is expected to play left field (Matt Holliday is moving to right) and back up Albert Pujols at first. His deal is in the neighborhood of $8 million for one year.
