49ers defense wastes Kaepernick comeback

A week ago, Colin Kaepernick took a major beating from the media due to poor play. His regression was in full swing as the 49ers combined for 10 points in the last two games, both losses, and Kaepernick fired five interceptions, two returned for scores, and zero touchdowns.

On Sunday night on primetime, with the entire football world watching, Kaepernick regressed once again, but this time, back to the 2012-13 Kaepernick, the same one who led the 49ers to a Super Bowl and two straight conference title games.

After a slow first half, Kap got hot, firing for a pair of second half scores and leading the 49ers downfield with under five minutes to play, giving San Francisco a 27-23 lead with less than two minutes to play.

Then defense decided to let running back Shane Vereen play Jerry Rice out of the backfield, catch ball after ball for first down after first down, until New York eventually got into position for a the game winning touchdown with just 21 seconds left to play.

It was a wasted performance for Kap, who played a magnificent second half. It’s a moral victory no doubt, but it would have been even better to leave New York with a W instead of an L in the standings.

The 1-4 49ers continue their long-post Harbaugh season next week, with a Super Bowl rematch against John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens.

If anything comes out of this game, let it be this: Colin Kaepernick played well, and that’s a good sign.
