In the course of reading up a little about blogging, and in particular for those who want to be taken seriously and seen seriously, and not just as some lunatic screaming in the woods (though I do do that too), the one thing I’ve constantly seen suggested is to spend a little cash and get your own domain name.
Well, consider the bullet bitten.
I didn’t want to add numbers or change the name of the site in order to find a free (as in, available) domain. Punch up thenetset.com (no I will not link it) and you’ll see that whoever owns it is more than happy to sell it….for sixteen hundred dollars.
You know, I hope someday that I’m in a position where that’s a decision I can make. Because it’ll mean a lot of other things have gone really, really right. But for now — nuts to that. thenetset.web and thenetset.net were also taken (really would have liked the second one), but thenetset.org was freely available. So here we are.
All backlinks to URL’s containing the wordpress domain will still work, including the address for the main page. But from now on, I’ll be posting as thenetset.org . Keyboard shortcut (at least in Firefox) — you can type in ‘thenetset’ and hit control-shift-enter, and it gets you here.
I’ve tinkered with the dashboard interface a little, and you can also now rate posts on a 5-star scale. Be honest, and tell me how I’m doing! Comments can also be rated.
So update your bookmarks — if you like. As said, you don’t really need to. This is our new home, and it feels right.
