Bob Lichtenfels of Scout.com is reporting that the Nittany Lions have secured a verbal commitment from 5-star DT Tommy Schutt of Glen Ellyn, IL.
The 6’3”, 290-pound Schutt is ranked by Scout.com as the 6th best DT in the class of 2012. The strong points of his game are his explosion off the line of scrimmage, strength, and his intensity and effort. He will need to improve his technique and moves at the next level.
Schutt also had offers from Florida, Nebraska, Ohio State, and Oregon, among others. Here is the player evaluation on his Scout.com page, written by Allen Trieu
“Very good athlete who gets off the ball and shows good ability and effort in pursuit. Compact and strong, he gets under the pads of offensive linemen and does a good job with his hands disengaging. Right now, he’s a disruptor and a playmaker and plays outside a lot. In college, if he’s going to be a true defensive tackle, he’ll have to be a little more disciplined and tie up blockers more, rather than being the one making the play.”
He finished his junior season at Glenbard West High School with 67 tackles, 12 sacks and 4 fumble recoveries. He self-reports a 345 pound max bench press, 535 pound max squat and a 26-inch vertical jump.
The news of Schutt comes just hours after the Lions grabbed a verbal commitment from another prized recruit, 4-star WR Eugene Lewis of Plymouth, PA. Lichtenfels now has Penn State ranked as the 13th best recruiting class for 2012.
