The Cardinals and Giants (finally) begin the NLCS tonight in St. Louis.
Before GM 1 of the NLDS, we made 5 super-bold predictions for the NLDS and ended up nailing 2 of five (Kershaw did get rocked, the FS1 broadcast of GM 1 was the highest rated in the network’s history), missing on 2 (Bourjos did not hit a HR, Rosenthal had 4 strikeouts instead of 7) and realizing far too late that 1 was stupid (the Joe Buck thing… I did tape a clip off TV that I was going to argue was valid, but since I missed 2 others… meh).
Let’s see if we can do better for the NLCS.
1: The Cardinals only hit 2 home runs all series. 1 meaningless.
After blasting 7 HR’s in 4 games, the Cardinals will have a power outage against the Giants. In fact, they’re only going to hit 1 meaningful home run (up/down less than 3 runs) in the entire NLCS.
The Cardinals are really only great at one thing in 2014 – doing the exact opposite of what you expect. We were spoiled with all those bombs last week.
2: Carlos Martinez gets at least 1 save.
Even The Wallendas get off that tightrope after a while. And while the Trevor Rosenthal experience has produced a stupendous high-wire act, he can’t walk it forever.
I don’t want to think of all the heartburn that will lead to this save – but it’s going to happen.
3: The Sign Guy is going to make a Hunter Pence sign.
And you’re going to have to explain it to someone you’re watching the game with. Or to a Twitter follower you have. ‘Uh, what does GoT have to do with BASEBALL?!’ #What – and you’ll just shake your head.
4: AJ Pierzynski gets a hit.
He’s active for the NLCS and he’s going to come through with a hit.
Take yourself back to April. And try to imagine the scenario where AJ Pierzynski was coming out the dugout for the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS in a big situation. I would have liked to see what you came up with.
5: The Cardinals will have a botched bunt.
And we’re all going to very salty about it.
At the end of the day, as long as we get to do one of these silly lists for the World Series, that’s all that really matters. Onward.
