5) I don’t get the sudden outcry of disappointment for Marshawn Lynch being traded. Isn’t that what everyone wanted? Wasn’t Lynch a nuisance to society? Didn’t he embarrass the city of Buffalo? Did you honestly think Lynch was going to get a 2nd or 3rd round pick in return? People, you need to realize that running backs are a dime a dozen in this league. Not only can you find a running back late in the draft, but most teams have a running back by committee. If you are only counting on your feature back to get 10-15 carries a game because he’s splitting time with someone else, then you aren’t going to give up much in a trade. That is the main reason why I didn’t give a crap about Marshawn Lynch getting traded, because the Bills weren’t going to get much in return. The trade for the Bills should tell you what the market for a running back has truly become. Hell, Willis McGahee got the Bills two thirds and Travis Henry got the Bills a 3rd round pick, and both were better backs than Lynch.
I think fans are just ticked off because the Bills are so terrible and people are looking for anything to bitch about. When Jason Peters was traded, everyone was happy as can be, because they were getting rid of a greedy player, who some felt was overrated (I Didn’t agree). However, in my view, I think people reacted positively towards it because T.O. had just signed with the Bills and everyone was drinking the Bills kool-aid at that moment. “Forget Peters, we got T.O. and nothing is going to stop us now!!?” Now, the Bills are a disaster and nothing is going to make us happy. Bottom line: What the team got in return was fair value when it comes to trading for a running back. Now, if only their scouting department knew how to draft players (more on that later).
4) As for Lynch, like I’ve said all along, he didn’t tick me off as much as he did others. I’ve always said, as long as you are here on Sunday, I don’t care what these guys do in their spare time. Don’t give me this crap about being an embarrassment to the community and being a role model. I’m sorry, but missing the playoffs for ten straight years is way more embarrassing than a running back driving over fat chicks. In other words, there are bigger fish to fry.
If anything, the Lynch vs the city of Buffalo debate has made me more scared at how other players view the city. When you have a player that has had meetings with cops about being harassed and his agent told the public that Buffalo has racist, rogue cops, then you are asking for trouble. Perception is reality and even if it was all Lynch’s fault, I’m sure more NFL players would agree with his assessment than that of Jerry Sullivan. Again, having a losing tradition of ten years isn’t going to enlighten players to come to Buffalo and when you throw in rogue cops telling your star running back to get rid of his pit bulls, it just doesn’t help.
3) The Lynch saga is kind of sad if you think about it. When he was first drafted by the Bills, he was the complete opposite of Willis McGahee. You remember him? The guy who pretty much hated Buffalo and the feeling was kind of mutual. Lynch had a nice rookie year, but more importantly, he was a breathe of fresh air to this football team. He did the whole ESPN thing at Dave and Busters to go along with his little comic book intro at Bills games. He was a fan favorite.
Well, three years later, he kind of became the McGahee of this football team. I guess, McGahee 2.0. A guy who didn’t like Buffalo and the majority of the fans felt the same. Its ironic, because when McGahee first came to Buffalo, he too was a fan favorite and the face of the franchise. Gosh, what the hell is with this football team and first round running backs?-
2) As for the on the field stuff, this now frees up the Bills to actually have a 1-2 punch with their running backs. Yes, three running backs on the roster proved to be too much for Chan Gailey to distribute carries. Of course, handing the ball off nine times to your running backs against the Jets sure doesn’t help matters. Also, this trade now puts the omen on CJ Spiller to actually start to do something. There aren’t going to be anymore excuses about the Bills having too many running backs, and I don’t care about Spiller being a rookie. Like I’ve said, running back is the easiest position to transition to in the pro game. Spiller has to start proving that he is worth being the 9th pick in the draft. As for Lynch, I think Seattle got a stud player, who should be able to eclipse 1,000 yards because he will be the featured back on the team. Now, who will rush for more yards? Lynch, Jackson or Spiller? I gotta go with Lynch.
Lastly, the trade totally makes it a forgone conclusion that the Bills were just trying to showcase Lynch for other teams by starting him. I mean, its not like another running back outplayed him this season. I’m not sure how I feel about the showcasing, it’s kind of weird and in the end, I don’t think it really helped the Bills cause in getting him moved. Actually, isn’t the preseason suppose to be the time of year that you showcase trade bait? You know, aren’t you trying to win games during the regular season? Whatever, man-
1) If this isn’t another indictment against the Bills hire-ups when it comes to drafting, I don’t know what else is. Do I even have to go over the first round picks that have been busts or are no longer on the team? Again, how does Tom Modrak still have a job with this team? I’m sorry, but he should have been fired 20 different times by now. Again, if the Bills don’t get their scouting department in order, it’s not going to matter if it is Chan Gailey or Vince Lombardi manning those sidelines, because you need the players to actually win some football games.
BTW, these have been the last eight 4th round selections made by the Bills: Marcus Easley, Shawn Nelson, Reggie Corner, Derek Fine, Dwayne Wright, Ko Simpson, Duke Preston and Tim Euhus. Now, do you see why I wasn’t clamoring for Lynch to get traded? Oh, and one more BTW, the Bills have only one player remaining from their 2007 draft class. Stay classy, my friends.
