Former big leaguer Pascual Perez was killed during a robbery at his home in the Dominican Republic.
While the motive is not yet known, initial reports are that the pitcher received his pension payment Wednesday and that might be a possible reason for the murder. According to police, there were several assailants and that the house in the town of Don Gregorio appeared to have been ransacked. No one has been taken into custody.
“It’s an act of criminality, unfortunately,” prosecutor Joel Valdemiro said.
Perez’s body was found by his ex-wife Maritza Montero Thursday morning. No cause of death has been determined, but officials say the 55-year-old had a fractured skull from a blow to the head.
Over eleven years in the bigs (1980-1991), Perez was 67-68 with a 3.44 ERA. His lone All-Star campaign came in 1983 while pitching with the Atlanta Braves.
