Hey, Baltimore Orioles fans, that familiar face you saw bumping around Sarasota this week was, indeed, Gary Sheffield.
But, no, he wasn’t trying to make the team. Far from it. The nine-time All-Star was in camp pitching (get it?) his latest client…righty Josh Banks.
Wait..client?
That’s right, it appears “Sheff” picked up a thing or two during his 22-year big league run…dude is now the brains behind the Sheffield Management and Entertainment Group. And, apparently, he knows what he is doing. The 29-year-old Banks got an invite to tryout with the birds.
“(Sheffield) brought him here,” Orioles GM Dan Duquette told The Baltimore Sun, “because he sees the opportunity for pitchers to help our major league team. So Gary’s been paying attention, I’ll tell you that.”
This wasn’t Sheffield’s first foray into agenting (is that even a word?) either. In 2003, he brokered his own deal with the New York Yankees…getting $39 million over three years.
