Player of the Game
Francisco Lindor had a 3-hit game today, including a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the 8th inning of the always tough Dellin Betances. This was Lindor’s second straight 3-hit game.
Feathers Up
Carlos Santana hit his first home run from the right side of the plate since September of 2014. Putting a temporary halt to my half-serious campaign for Santana to switch to a full-time left-handed hitter.
Francisco Lindor continues to surprise everyone with his bat after another multi-hit performance today. Most thought Lindor would become a very capable major league hitter eventually, but I don’t think anyone would have thought he’d be the third best hitter on the team while posting a .292/.327/.408 slash line in his first season.
While this was far from a pretty outing for Bauer, he got the job done. Bauer pitched 6.1 innings allowing just 1 earned run on 2 hits while striking out 7. His control continued to be an issue, but today he was able to work around it, more importantly Bauer didn’t allow a single home run.
Feathers Down
The Indians had two runners on in each of the first three innings but could only plate two runners. The 5th inning saw the Indians put a runner on the corners with nobody out. Carlos Santana hit a shallow fly to left and Mike Aviles attempted to tag from third but was tagged out at home. After Yan Gomes was walked the bases were loaded for Abraham Almonte who drew a walk to plate one runner, but Jerry Sands lined out to center and what could have been a huge inning fizzled out with just one run scored. The Indians accumulated 16 baserunners through 8 walks and 8 hits through 7 innings, there were at least 2 runners on base in each inning except the 4th and 6th, but the Indians plated just 3 runs.
Bauer’s command issues continue to plague him. He issued 6 walks today, a number that typically spells disaster, but fortunately for Bauer it didn’t. This is a rare instance in which that many walks didn’t result in an explosion of earned runs.
Final Score: Cleveland Indians 4 – New York Yankees 3
On Deck: The Indians will make up their June 15th rain out against the Cubs tomorrow. The 2:05 start will feature a battle of aces as Corey Kluber takes on John Lester.
