Player of the Game
After a couple rough outings, Corey Kluber has allowed just two earned runs in his last two starts, spanning 14 innings. Today, he allowed just one earned and one unearned run while striking out nine in 7.1 innings. He allowed one baserunner per inning with one walk and seven singles and the only earned run actually scored after he was removed from the game, off Bryan Shaw.
Feathers Up
Much like yesterday against Chris Sale, the Indians scored early thanks to two out hitting and a triple. Carlos Santana started the second inning rally with a single, although he was out at second on a Juan Uribe fielder’s choice. Yan Gomes then became Jose Quintana‘s second HBP victim of the game and both runners scored on a two out, two run triple to right off the bat of Lonnie Chisenhall.
Milestone Alert: Corey Kluber hit career strike out number 773 today, moving him into 20th place in Indians history, matching Hall of Famer and fellow Cy Young Award winner, Gaylord Perry. By adding three more after, he moved into 19th place beyond Willie Mitchell with 776, but 19 isn’t a round number, so it isn’t as big of a deal. For those wondering if this is more because of the amount of time he has played, his 9.5 K/9 is the best ever by an Indians starter with at least 300 IP.
Feathers Down
The White Sox got on the board in the sixth with one of the oddest plays you’ll see. Todd Frazier walked to start the inning, but remained at first after two were out. He tried to steal second with Brett Lawrie, but Yan Gomes threw to shallow right center instead. As Frazier headed to second, Rajai Davis overran the ball and allowed Frazier to score an unearned run as Lawrie would eventually strike out.
Today, Kluber succeeded despite his own team not providing him with much back-up. The only run he allowed while in the game came after multiple errors and Mike Napoli had a missed catch error earlier in the game. Once Kluber was removed in the eighth, Shaw quickly allowed a home run to bring the game to within one. Don’t worry though, Shaw eventually got his two outs and his ninth save of the season.

On Deck: The Indians are off tomorrow, but have no fear as they will return Friday with Trevor Bauer on the bump against Mike Wright of the Orioles. The game will be back in Cleveland at 7:10 PM as the start of a ten game home stand.
