Adrian Gonzalez Lands in Beantown

Adrian Gonzalez Lands in Beantown

Yes, we were fooled, last night we reported that the Adrian Gonzalez deal to Boston had fell through.

Well, apparently it didn’t because Monday, GM Theo Epstein introduced the club’s new first baseman.

The deal had reportedly fallen through because the two sides could not come to a long-term contract extension, but Epstein said that he was “very confident” that they could work something out, meaning Kevin Youkilis will move to third now that Gonzo is in Beantown.

The trade sends prospects, Casey Kelly (RHP), Anthony Rizzo (1B), Reymond Funetes (OF), and a player to be named later to the Padres.

“I’m very excited to be here in Boston and ready to beat the Yankees,” Gonzalez said today at the Fenway park presser.

The lefty has hit 30 or more home runs in four straight seasons, including 31 last season.  Overall, in five seasons with the Padres, he averaged 32 homers a season hit a career-high 40 homers in 2009, 28 away from hitter-tormenting Petco Park.

This trade will finally put an end to the rumors that have been swirling for a while now.  It is one of a few deals already done at the Winter Meetings that officially got underway today.
