Roster Update: Nick Hagadone’s return to the pros was short lived as he was sent back to Columbus today after not making it into his only game with the Tribe. With Michael Bourn going down with a tight hamstring that could see him miss one to five games (according to him), the Indians need a center fielder more than they need a nine man bullpen. Nyjer Morgan, who started the season with the team for a similar reason, will be taking Hagadone’s place on the 25 man roster.
Player of the Game
Corey Kluber had the game of his life today, despite giving up a first inning home run to Jose Abreu. With thoughts of a shut out out of the way, Kluber got on to striking people out, ending the gave with a career high of 13 (he set his career high of 11 just two starts ago). Kluber allowed just two hit after the Abreu blast (both singles) and four base runners total, one of which was eliminated with a double play. Of his 13 K’s, Kluber struck out each White Sox hitter at least once, Alejandro de Aza and Abreu twice and Jordan Danks three times. He threw eight innings, including seven shut out innings to end the game, giving him a POG score of 8.49.
Feathers Up
George Kottaras has never been know as a home run hitter, but he made a big impression today when he hit one out in his first at bat as an Indian. That not being enough, he added an even further shot to right field in his next at bat. It was his second career two home run game, his only other one coming in 2012 against the Red Sox when he was with Oakland. He is the first Cleveland Indian to hit a home run in his first two at bats with the team.
Milestone Alert: Corey Kluber set a new franchise record by striking out seven batters in a row, a streak that went from the third inning through the fifth. Bartolo Colon and Bob Feller held the previous record of six consecutive batters struck out. After a questionable walk to Leury Garcia, Kluber struck out Alejandro de Aza for his tenth strike out of the game and eighth straight out via the strike out.
Feathers Down
All of Kluber’s great work went for naught as John Axford walked two before giving up a home run to Dayan Viciedo to give the White Sox the lead. Axford couldn’t find the strike zone at all and only retired one batter before giving up the two run lead. The runs were the first given up by Axford since April 13th and he had saved five games in a row.
Final Score: Cleveland Indians 3 – Chicago White Sox 4
On Deck: Another Central Division foe will replace the White Sox with the Twins coming to town starting off with Kyle Gibson facing Zach McAllister at 7:05 pm, tomorrow night.
