Now this is some interesting stuff. Turns out I was wrong about BYU and UCI not remaining tied at #1, because they do. But it’s not just a carbon copy of last week’s ballot. Last week they were tied on 239 points, this week it’s 246. With Penn State losing to Ohio State, they’ve lost the one first-place vote they got the last couple of weeks, and now BYU and UCI split them 8 and 8. I’m not really sure how they reach 246 points, though, because (15*8) + (14*8)= only 232. Seems like that should be the highest possible score for a tie for first place.
My hypothetical ballot actually nailed ranks 3 through 5, they’re precisely the same in the real poll. And then we have another tie, for sixth, between Ohio State and UCLA. Northridge gained a couple of ranks, Penn State lost a couple, and then there’s USC. At 2-5 and losers of four straight, they still rate as top-10 in the nation. I don’t like it, but it is what it is. Contrast that with a team like Lewis, who have won seven straight and over that span have moved up…one rank. Seems like losing in the MPSF is better for your national rankings than winning in the MIVA (and for goodness sakes, UC San Diego are still receiving votes), and that just doesn’t seem right.
The poll has yet a third tie in it, for 11th, as Cal Baptist and Pacific share that rank. You can view the complete poll here.
