5/7 Game 2 Recap: White Sox 2 – Indians 3

Player of the Game

Josh Tomlin won tonight’s Player of the Game with 7.1 innings pitched and a new career high with 8 strikeouts. Tomlin only allowed 5 hits (one for extra bases) and one of the two runs he allowed actually came in against Joe Smith. It was one of his best outings of the season as he continues to improve week in and week out. His score of 5.98 far outshined second place Michael Brantley, who earned a 2.42 as he was the center of all the Indians early run scoring. Brantley knocked in the first run, took two extra bases and scored the Tribe’s second run. He also had a couple of nice plays defensively in centerfield.

Feathers Up

Milestone Alert: Travis Hafner‘s solo home run in game one tied him with Al Rosen for 8th all time on the Indians home run list. He is 22 home runs away from 7th place all time.

Apparently Alexei Ramirez thought the reason no one has ever stole a base off Josh Tomlin in over 260 innings pitched was due to lack of attempts. He was shown the error of his ways by Lou Marson, who threw him out by at least 3 feet. Ramirez is only the second base runner to ever attempt a steal against Josh Tomlin and just like the runner before him, was called out.

Lou Marson had his one good game a month today as he walked, stole second and scored on a single for the Indians first run. Lou can now take it easy until June.

With the sweep of the double header, the Tribe is now 5 games ahead of Chicago and 2.5 ahead of Detroit. The Indians have won 6 of their last 7 games and will look to earn the series win tomorrow. It would be their 4th consecutive series win.

Feathers Down

As weatherman Matt Underwood could have told you, there was about 2 hours of total rain delays today. One good thing to come from the delays…Joe Smith came in to finish the 8th instead of the scheduled pitcher, Dan Wheeler.

Play of the Game

Tony Sipp struck out Tyler Flowers to earn his first save of the season after smartly walking Paul Konerko.
