Roster Update: Pitcher madness continues as the Indians make their 12th roster move involving a pitcher in the past week. This time, Matt Langwell was sent down after just one game with the team in exchange for Joe Martinez, who was signed as a Spring Training invitee this March for some bullpen help. Yesterday combined for the longest (18 inning) double header in MLB history and the Indians used every reliever on the roster.
Player of the Game
Jason Kipnis kept up his hot streak in June and in Chicago with a game tying two run home run in the sixth inning. This month he has hit 4 home runs and knocked in 25 while batting well over .400. He also walked and singled, and has now been on base 11 times during the three games of this series so far. Today he won the Player of the Game with a POG score of 5.04. After a horrendous start to the season, Kipnis has now pushed his batting average to .299.
Feathers Up
Joe Martinez finally made his Indians debut today after originally being traded for in 2011. Martinez was released at the end of the 2011 season without ever making it to the majors. It was worth the wait as Martinez threw two scoreless innings, allowing just two hits when the Indians needed it today to keep the game tied. A timely Nick Swisher single gave the Indians the lead while Martinez was in the game, giving him his first career win as an Indian.
Chris Perez picked up his first save since returning from the DL and was distraction free. He threw a perfect ninth inning to earn the one run save, his second perfect inning since his return.
With the win the Indians will be able to try for the four game sweep tomorrow and have already won the series. With a Tigers loss today, they could get to within a single game of the Central Division lead.
Feathers Down
Ubaldo Jimenez fought through trouble again today, allowing nine hits in five inning including a one out RBI double in the second inning and two consecutive two out singles in the fifth inning that allowed two more runs. Both hits gave the White Sox the lead, but Kipnis was able to save Jimenez from the loss with a game tying home run.
Final Score: Cleveland Indians 4 – Chicago White Sox 3
