Roster Update: Luke Carlin was designated for assignment to make room for relief pitcher Esmil Rogers, purchased from the Colorado Rockies. Carlin was on the Major League roster just last week as Carlos Santana was out with a concussion. Hopefully no one will claim him and he can return to the Clippers, otherwise the Indians will only have Matt Pagnozzi in Columbus. If anything were to happen to Lou Marson or Santana the Indians depth chart at catcher is now limited to Pagnozzi (AAA), Chun Chen (AA) and Michel Hernandez (AA).
Player of the Game
Jeanmar Gomez won his third Player of the Game of the season as he pitched 5 innings and only allowed a single earned run. Gomez also helped his own cause with a single of his own. His final score was 1.66.
Feathers Up
Trevor Crowe recently returned from injury and has been moved back up to AAA after a short rehab stint and Ezequiel Carrera is available as well. I wonder how long the Indians will deal with Johnny Damon‘s futility before switching for a much more effective internal solution.
Jeanmar Gomez was a huge positive note in today’s game as he was able to come back from his horrific start last time out to pitch a half decent game. He was even able to get out of trouble in the 5th when the Reds loaded the bases twice, but were only able to score a single run.
If there was one tough game for the Indians to win this series it was today’s. The Indians now need to focus and come back to win the rest of the series to keep in line with the White Sox.
Hit Streak Update: Michael Brantley singled in the 7th to bring his streak to MLB high 19 games.
Feathers Down
Jeanmar Gomez has a little to learn about playing in the National League. In his first at bat he attempted a sacrifice bunt with two already out, successfully bringing an end to the inning and later he allowed a run after giving up a single to the opposing pitcher, Johnny Cueto. Cueto then took second on a wild pitch and scored on an error by Carlos Santana.
Today may have been Tony Sipp‘s last chance in the bullpen this year. With the signing of Rogers, who is out of options, the Indians will have to make a corresponding 25 man roster move. This player will likely come out of the bullpen and Sipp is currently by far the worse pitcher out of the pen. While Nick Hagadone and Scott Barnes are younger and have more options than Sipp, they have also out pitched him to this point in the season. These three pitchers are all left handed and are the three most likely to be sent down. This will give the Indians a slightly more conventional bullpen with just two left handers. Tonight Sipp allowed two runs when he gave up a home run to fellow left hander, Joey Votto.
Play of the Game
Carlos Santana threw behind the runner at first in the third inning with runners on first and third. This allowed the pitcher, Cueto, to score from third with an unearned run.
