Roster Update: Francisco Lindor is finally here, but he was not placed into the starting lineup for today’s game. Nick Swisher was placed on the 15-day DL, a move that could potentially be the final nail in the Nick Swisher coffin. He’s been battling knee issues for the last few days and it’s progressed to the point where he needs time on the DL. For those (me) that thought Swisher could bounce back, this will make that possibility all the more unlikely.
Player of the Game
Jason Kipnis continues to pace the Indians on the offensive side, racking up another paid of hits today. He’s now hitting .335 on the year, good for 3rd overall in the American League.
Feathers Up
Much like Danny Salazar in the opening game of the series, Corey Kluber gave the Indians another great start only to be let down by his offense. Kluber pitched five innings because of the rain delay, scattering four hits while walking one and striking out two. He gave up just two earned runs over that stretch including one mammoth home run to none other than Miguel Cabrera, Kluber’s mortal enemy, that landed near the location of Cabrera’s home run in game one of the series.
Francisco Lindor made his major league debut in today’s game, coming on for David Murphy. In his first at bat he struck out but in his second at bat he roped a line drive into the corner in right field that would have been a double had he not tripped over his own feet making the turn.
Feathers Down
Alfredo Simon continues to be a thorn in the Indians’ side. In three starts against the Tribe totaling 19 innings, Simon has allowed just 4 earned runs for a 1.89 ERA. He and David Price have killed the Indians’ bats this season and have been a big reason why the Tribe has not had success against the Tigers this year.
Scott Atchison, who has been terrible all season, served up a 3-run bomb to J.D. Martinez that blew the game wide open in the 6th inning after coming on in relief of Kluber after the 2 hour rain delay. Atchison was a pleasant surprise last season providing valuable innings to the Indians, but this year has been quite the opposite as he’s allowed 5 home runs in just 16 innings of work.
Final Score: Cleveland Indians 1 – Detroit Tigers 8
On Deck: Tomorrow, the Tribe travels to the Windy City for an interleague match-up with the young Cubbies. Jake Arrieta is on the mound for the Cubs, facing off against Trevor Bauer who is coming off a very rough outing against the Mariners on this past Wednesday.
