Player of the Game

A couple of late inning home runs by David Murphy and Roberto Perez weren’t quite enough support to bring the Indians victory over the Tigers. Perez contributed the most to the Tribe’s offense tonight with 2 extra base hits, 2 runs scored, and an RBI.

Feathers Up

Trevor Bauer and the Indians started things off rough in the first today after Ian Kinsler and Miguel Cabrera both hit one out singles to put runners on the corners. In this difficult situation, Bauer got Victor Martinez to line out easily, then Terry Francona got the umpires to overturn an Yoenis Cespedes triple into a ground rule double, saving a run and moving Cespedes from third back to second. After an intentional walk, Francisco Lindor then ended the inning with a nice diving play at short.

Jeff Manship not only pitched as long in relief as Trevor Bauer did as the starter, but he did so much more effectively. Brought into a jam with none out in the fourth, Manship allowed just one of two inherited runners to score on a sacrifice fly. Over his three innings, he allowed just one hit, an Ian Kinsler single and he abruptly erased that with a ground ball double play.

Milestone Update: Jason Kipnis knocked in the first two runs of the game for the Tribe with an RBI double in the third, giving him a 17 game hitting streak and a 26 game streak at home. The 17 game streak is his career high and the home streak is the longest in Progressive Field history, breaking the record he broke yesterday. Kipnis later scored in the inning when Michael Brantley singled through a drawn in infield. Kipnis is now first in the AL in doubles and average.

Feathers Down

By far the worst start of the season for the Indians most consistent pitcher to this point, Trevor Bauer allowed runs in each of the four innings he pitched in including three before exiting without an out in the fourth. If it weren’t for some slick defense, things could have been worse in each of the first two innings, but Bauer took it out of the defenses hands in the next two by allowing a solo home run to Yeonis Cespedes and a bases loaded walk and double down the line in the fourth. Another run came in after Bauer was removed from the game, giving him an official line of 3 IP, 7 ER, 4 BB, 9 H, 3 K.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians  5  Detroit Tigers 8

On Deck: In game two between Detroit and Cleveland, Danny Salazar will face the Indians nemesis and Tigers’ ace, David Price at 7:10 PM Tuesday night. Price has already beaten the Indians twice this year, allowing no earned runs in 14.2 innings. The last match between the two was ten days ago when Price pitched a complete game shut out with eight strike outs against the Tribe.
