6/28 Game 1 Recap: Shades of 2013 as Ubaldo Jimenez Dominates Tribe

Roster Update: Taking advantage of the 26 man roster for double headers, the Indians have purchased the contract of Toru Murata from AAA. He is scheduled to start the second game of the double header.

Player of the Game

In one of the Indians most mediocre games of the season, all but one player used had a POG score of between -0.75 and 0.45. The one exception was relief pitcher Jeff Manship, who came in to save the eighth after Nick Hagadone allowed a double and a walk. Manship stranded both runners with a fly to short left and a double play that was magnificently turned by Francisco Lindor.

Feathers Up

Trevor Bauer allowed just five hits today, but all turned into runs one way or another. This was generally just bad timing for Bauer as most innings were clean, but when he gave up hits, they came in a group. Bauer even got his walks under control, giving the Orioles just two free base runners, one a hit batter. Bauer struck out five and allowed four runs as he found his way through seven innings.

Feathers Down

Ubaldo Jimenez was dominant today, in ways the Indians haven’t seen for quite some time. He killed Jason Kipnis‘ 20 game hitting streak and held the Tribe to just four hits in eight innings, striking out seven. Only Michael Brantley managed to reach base twice, snaring half of the Indians hits as the rest of the lineup featured a lot of big swings rather than simply going for contact.

It is hard to blame either Bauer or the bullpen for this loss as yet again, the Indians were held scoreless. While some credit should be given to a great pitching performance, the fact that the Indians lineup faced Jimenez three times and never made any real adjustments is a bad show for both the players and their coaching staff. Since June 17th, the Indians have now averaged just 2.4 runs per game and have been shut out in three of their last 14 games.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians 0  Baltimore Orioles 4

On Deck: Don’t go to far, the Indians and Orioles will be back at it again at 7:05 PM tonight with the Orioles throwing Chris Tillman and the Indians going with Murata in his Major League debut.
