The All-Star Game came and went with little to no fanfare…but that doesn’t necessarily mean it was a quiet week at The Hall of Very Good.
Here’s Bo Rosny with this week’s installment of “This Week in Baseball Cards”.
In this past week’s Friday Five, Yankee Stadium “Bleacher Creature” “Bald Vinny” Milano recounted his five favorite moments witnessed from the Yankee Stadium bleachers. As I only get to one or two games a year, the best moments I’ve witnessed are a lot more mundane. I did get to see a couple of walkoffs, but my favorite memory is probably my first, a complete game shutout by Charlie Hudson in 1987, viewed from the left-field bleachers. I was part of that crowd that chanted “Charlie, Charlie,” and I was convinced that that was a cheer that would be heard at Yankee Stadium for many, many years. Unfortunately, that was not the game as Hudson rarely pitched so well after that, but it was still a great memory for this young Yankee fan.
On Wednesday we revealed Bryce Harper’s Mom and Pops tattoos, brilliantly positioned so that all he can see are the upside down letters. When David Wells look down at his arm, he sees his baby’s upside down face. At least, I assume that’s his baby and not the kid from “Two and a Half Men.”
On Tuesday, The Hall chronicled the problems of the minor league Lake County Fielders and their absentee owner, Kevin Costner. A couple of weeks ago in this space, we noted that Jeff Montgomery listed Costner as his favorite actor on his 1992 Studio card. Costner was a big deal to those 1992 Royals; Wally Joyner noted that he like Costner as much as he liked Mark Harmon! These ballplayers must be disappointed in how their acting idol has fared as a baseball owner.
