6/7 Recap: Seattle Snaps Tribe’s Streak

Roster Update: Relief pitcher Austin Adams was optioned to AAA Columbus on Tuesday, to make room for starter Cody Anderson who was recalled from Columbus for a spot-start. The move was made after Danny Salazar‘s scheduled start Tuesday was skipped due to shoulder fatigue.

Player of the Game

Lonnie Chisenhall was one of the very few offensive bright spots for the Indians on Tuesday, going 2-3 with a double and a home run. However, he also showed his defensive ability, cutting down Seth Smith at second base trying for a double.

Feathers Up

Despite Cody Anderson‘s rough line, he pitched well for the majority of the evening. He was victim to more than a little misfortune, as he appeared to have struck out Robinson Cano in the first inning, in what would have retired the side, but Yan Gomes couldn’t secure the catch on what the umpire ruled a foul tip. The next at bat, Nelson Cruz took Anderson deep to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. In the 4th, Anderson once again looked to have gotten out of the inning on an Adam Lind ground ball to Francisco Lindor, but Lindor couldn’t immediately decide to throw the ball to second or first, and everyone was safe on the play. Anderson proceeded to give up four runs before being removed from the game. In reality, Anderson could have entered the fifth inning having allowed no runs. His fastball was sharp, sitting between 93-95 mph, and his offside pitches were effective too, as shown by his five strikeouts.

Milestone Alert: With a walk to lead off the fourth inning, Jason Kipnis now has 281 in his career, tying him with Casey Blake for 50th in Indians history.

Feathers Down

All good things must come to an end, and with the Tribe’s loss Tuesday, their six game winning streak was snapped. Unfortunately, the after effects of the loss may linger: Yan Gomes was removed from the game after being struck in the groin with a foul ball, resulting in a testicular contusion, according to the team. Baltimore’s Caleb Joseph was just put on the DL for such an injury, so it will be something to monitor going forward.

As brilliant as Francisco Lindor is, his hesitation in the 4th inning was a reminder that the shortstop is still just 22 years old, and is still prone to the odd mental mistake. As he continues to mature, such mistakes will become rarer.

Juan Uribe was hitless on Tuesday, which now drops him to 3 for his last 24. While he has been a good locker room presence, he has largely been a liability at the plate this season. It will be interesting to see how the Indians continue to utilize him during the course of the season.
