This past Friday, MLB pipeline revealed their top 100 prospects list and the Phillies led the way with a Major League best seven players. The Phillies players mentioned on the list were J.P. Crawford (#5), Jake Thompson (#55), Nick Williams (#64), Mark Appel (#70), Cornelius Randolph (#84), Jorge Alfaro (#96), and Roman Quinn (#99). Seeing the Phillies with the most prospects on this list is a sign of a job well done by the front office, who worked day and night to retool this farm system. Through the draft and trades, the Phillies now have a chance for a bright future and the trades made are one of the big reasons, because four players on the list weren’t even in the Phillies system at the beginning of 2015. The Phillies are finally embracing the new age, where it’s okay to hold onto your prospects instead of shipping them all off for rental players and depleting the farm system like they have in the past.

The highest rated Phillies prospect on MLB’s Top 100 list was no surprise with shortstop J.P. Crawford coming in at #5 behind Julio Urias of the Dodgers, Lucas Giolito of the Nationals, Byron Buxton of the Twins, and Corey Seager of the Dodgers. Though the Phillies had the most prospects on the list, only J.P.Crawford cracked the Top 50 with Jake Thompson (acquired in the Hamels trade) missing the Top 50 by five spots. Six of these seven players could be with the Phillies sometime in 2016 so it’s nice to know help will be on the way and the new era of the Phillies can officially commence.
The Phillies being well represented on MLB’s Top 100 prospects list is a great thing, but it doesn’t mean a whole lot. No one knows what these players will be able to do in the majors yet until they get there. The best outcome is that a majority of these players translates to talent on the field and not just names on paper forever trapped.
