7/21 Recap: Indians Play Nice to Garza in Return, Score One on Nine Hits

Player of the Game

Responsible for the only Indians run of the game, Giovanny Urshela‘s seventh inning double was the Indians first hit with a runner in scoring position during the last two games. He also singled earlier in the game as one of three batters with multiple hits.

Feathers Up

It may be a good thing that the Indians have looked completely inept since the return of baseball after the All-Star break as it will not garner false hope. It was going to take an incredibly hot stretch for the Indians to even get back into the Wild Card race and with the offense still generally non existent, it’s not going to happen. This should at least free the front office to make the moves they need to make to prepare for 2016 including trading David Murphy, Ryan Raburn and possibly Mike Aviles, removing Michael Bourn any way possible and getting the ready rookie crop, essentially Tyler Holt, Jose Ramirez, Jesus Aguilar, Shawn Armstrong and possibly Tyler Naquin, up now so they can be ready to compete next year.

Feathers Down

Continuing a season long theme, the Indians got runners to third in nearly identical situations in the second and fourth, but were unable to score. Both times there were runners on first and second for Yan Gomes, who moved the lead runner to third. The Indians should know better than to set situations up for Bourn, however and in his first chance he grounded into an inning ending double play, the second time ending the inning with a strike out.

In a similar situation in the fifth, Francisco Lindor showed that not only Bourn can destroy a scoring chance. With runners on first and second and one out, he too grounded into a double play after swinging at a pitch in the dirt that otherwise would have been ball four. To spread the fun further, Brandon Moss grounded into a double play to end the sixth as well, although this time there wasn’t a runner in scoring position.

Danny Salazar was less impressive than he can be and the offense was absent again, but it was Zach McAllister who decided this game when he came in to pitch the eighth. He faced four batters, all of whom reached base with three singles and a walk. It was his worst appearance out of the bullpen this season by far and his first truly bad appearance since June 7th against Baltimore. Ryan Webb relieved McAllister and used some terrific defense from Lindor and Gomes got the first two outs, but a Lindor error allowed another to score and two more came in after giving the Brewers an insurmountable six run lead.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians 1 Milwaukee Brewers 8
