Player of the Game
The Indians LOOGY turned long reliever tonight as Nick Hagadone threw 2.1 innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit. Hagadone came in for Trevor Bauer in the fifth and the Indians needed a few scoreless innings just to keep things within reaching distance. His one hit allowed was triple against his last batter faced as he threw 29 pitches (20 strikes) in his career high 2.1 innings.
Feathers Up
The game was slightly closer than the 5-2 score would appear. Three Indians hits (Nick Swisher and David Murphy’s doubles along with Asdrubal Cabrera’s single) all hit hard against outfield walls within a few feet of the top. Of these, only Swisher scored, so had they left the stadium the game would have been at least two runs closer.
Feathers Down
Indians outfielders showed the best and worst ways to play a ball off the outfield wall in the fourth inning as Trevor Bauer gave them plenty of chances with three of four consecutive batters hitting doubles deep into the outfield. After Kyle Seager bunted a single down the third base line against the shift, Corey Hart, Dustin Ackley and Chris Taylor doubled in the first four runs of the game. Ackley’s double could have easily been a triple, but David Murphy noticed that it would hit an odd angle of the wall and rushed to his left to cut off the ball before it even made contact. On the other side, Dickerson attempted to catch the ball high off the left field wall, but was no where close as the ball bounced back towards the infield and away from Dickerson.
Trevor Bauer started the game off fine, but was knocked out quickly after giving up four in the fourth, as detailed above, and another in the fifth. In the end, he threw just 4.1 innings, striking out only two while hitting two batters and giving up five extra base hits. Six of his eight hits allowed came in his last inning and a third, during which he allowed all five runs.
Replay hurt the Indians twice tonight, although one of the calls appeared to be accurate. The Mariners scored their fifth run of the night on a Mike Zunino home run that hit the rail in left and was caught by a fan. While this play seemed to be correctly called, another home run later on was not. In the seventh, David Murphy smashed a liner to right that flew over the glove of Corey Hart and above the wall before ricocheting back into center field for a double. The play was reviewed, and despite evidence to the contrary it was called a double, costing the Indians a run.
