7/31 Game Recap: Indians 3 – Royals 8

Trade Deadline News: In the biggest deal of the day (for the Indians) the Tribe moved top pitching prospect Steven Wright for the Red Sox AAA first-baseman Lars Anderson. Wright is a knuckle-baller that has played the entire season with AA Akron so far this year and has dominated. Anderson has some major league experience. In three postseasons Anderson has a .167 batting average over 30 games. Anderson looks just like the minor league left handed hitter the Indians were looking for the whole time.

Player of the Game

Jeremy Accardo runs away with tonight’s Player of the Game with a score of 2.27. Accardo pitched the 6th and 7th innings in tonight’s loss. In his 2 innings pitched, he gave up a single and struck out 2 batters. He now has 3 awards on the season. This outing was especially important as the Indians look to mix things up with their pitching staff in the upcoming week.

Feathers Up

The Indians announced today that Josh Tomlin will not be making his scheduled start on Thursday. They made it official by bringing Tomlin out of the bullpen for some long relief. Rumor has it that Tomlin will remain in the bullpen, but we shall see.

Manny Acta pulled the old man (Derek Lowe) before the 6th inning today. In fact, Acta called it quits after just 2.1 innings.

Early in the game, the Tribe offense was very active. The were stringing together hits and found themselves keeping up with the scoring pace of the Royals. After Derek Lowe gave up 5 runs in the 3rd inning (minutes after the Indians had just tied the game), it’s like the offense became sad and hopeless.

Feathers Down

Now that Tomilin is out of the rotation, maybe Derek Lowe is next. Lowe gave up 7 runs that the Royals scored today, in just 2.1 innings. He even managed to balk in a run when he stumbled during his delivery with the bases loaded.

With no real moves during the trade deadline, the Indians either have to improve on what they have or tap into the minor league system. With 2 months left in the season, they still have time to climb the Central Division ladder.

The Indians have now lost 4 games in a row and find themselves 6 games out of first place.

Play of the Game

Jason Kipnis dove for this ball late in the game. It didn’t have any effect on the outcome, but was worth a second look.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians 3 – Kansas City Royals 8
