CHARLES JOHNSON
First Year on Ballot

PLAYING CAREER:  Florida Marlins (1994–1998), Los Angeles Dodgers (1998), Baltimore Orioles (1999–2000), Chicago White Sox (2000), Florida Marlins (2001–2002), Colorado Rockies (2003–2004) and Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2005)

ACHIEVEMENTS:  Two-time All-Star (1997 and 2001) and 1997 World Series champion.  Won four straight Gold Gloves (1995-1998) and in 1995, became only the fourth catcher in Major League history to take home the award in his rookie season.  The others…Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk and Sandy Alomar, Jr.  His .993 fielding percentage ranks 16th all-time among big league catchers.  During his playing career, Johnson ranked second only to Iván Rodríguez in throwing out 39% of baserunners.  All-time leader in games caught by a Florida Marlin.

HOVG THOUGHTS:  The best thing about Charles Johnson…his three no hitters caught ties him with several other players for second place on the all-time list.   Who’s in first?  Boston Red Sox captain Jason Varitek.
