Roster Update: The Indians announced some devastating news today, that Corey Kluber has been placed on the 15 day disabled list with a strained middle finger. This is a similar injury to the one that sidelined Zach McAllister for almost 50 games earlier in the season. The Indians barely have 50 games left in the year, so if it takes Kluber that long to recover, it is likely we won't see him again until 2014. If there is any good news in this it is that Danny Salazar (scheduled to start tomorrow's game) will be able to stay in the rotation for the long term instead of a spot start. Josh Tomlin is also on the fast track, rehabbing from his Tommy John surgery and could take over the spot before the end of the year. Matt Langwell immediately took the place of Kluber of the roster.
Player of the Game
Welcome to Cleveland Marc Rzepczynski! An incredibly poor showing by the Indians in this game allowed the new Indians lefty to win his first Player of the Game with a score of just 1.50.
Feathers Up
The second through fifth innings for Detroit all ended in an easy flip from Asdrubal Cabrera to Jason Kipnis. Cabrera also got the assists for the final outs in innings six and seven. Nothing really great about this, but it was a busy night for the Indians short stop.
Justin Masterson didn't have his best stuff tonight, but even so, was able to pitch into the seventh inning, saving the bullpen (or saving the Indians from having to use the unmentionable parts of it). It was essentially just one bad inning that hurt Masterson, but he stayed in the game and gave the Tribe to come back by throwing two shut out innings after giving up five in the fifth.
Feathers Down
Justin Masterson forgot himself for a moment in the second inning and walked two batters, eventually loading the bases with none out. He quickly regained his composure, however and struck out two before ending the inning with a ground ball.
Don Kelly continues to own Masterson as he went 3-3 against the Indians ace, bringing his career average against Masterson above .450. Today he hit another three run home run, giving him two home runs and eight RBI in 24 career at bats.
If the Indians continue to lose to the Tigers they will have to see if the old adage is true. To beat the best, you have to beat the worst more times than the best does.
