Shin-Soo Choo, Texas Rangers

Homers: 21

Ground-Ball Rate: 50.2%

Fly-Ball Rate: 28.0%

Believe it or not, this is actually Choo’s second consecutive campaign of 20-plus homers despite his batted-ball profile. Based on his 47.8% ground-ball rate and 30.3% fly-ball rate for his career, though, it’s not totally unexpected.

The overall numbers look good for Choo, but he completely fell off the map after the All-Star break. He smashed just three second-half dingers, including just one since the start of August. Here’s how his batted-ball profile differed from one half to the next.

Those struggles following the midsummer classic will surely add to concerns the Rangers already had about Choo. He’s due to earn $21 million per year in both 2019 and 2020 to finish out his current contract, which would be his age-36 and age-37 seasons.
