8/16/17 Game Preview: New York Yankees at New York Mets

New York Mets v New York Yankees

The Subway Series hasn’t gone too well for the New York Mets (53-64) so far. The Mets have dropped the first two games of this series to the New York Yankees (63-55), falling a season high eleven games below .500. Those two contests came at Yankee Stadium, however, so the Mets have to hope a change in venue will reverse their fortunes. The Mets return home to kick off a nine game homestand tonight with the final two games of the Subway Series. First pitch for the opener of the Citi Field portion of the festivities is scheduled for 7:08 pm.

The Mets will send right hander Robert Gsellman (5-5, 6.16 ERA) to the mound tonight. Gsellman has been activated from the disabled list to take the rotation spot of Seth Lugo, who was placed on the disabled list yesterday with a shoulder impingement. The Yankees will counter with lefty Jaime Garcia (5-8, 4.50 ERA). Garcia pitched pretty well in his last start, giving up three runs in 5.2 innings against the Boston Red Sox last Friday, but did not factor in the decision. The Yankees ended up picking up a 5-4 win in that game.

Pre-Game Notes:

  • Gsellman has never faced the Yankees before.
  • Garcia is 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA in two starts against the Mets this season, both of which came as a member of the Atlanta Braves.
  • Both Jose Reyes and Wilmer Flores were in the original starting lineup but scratched with rib cage soreness. That forces the Mets to play Travis d’Arnaud at third base today, the first time d’Arnaud has ever played third in the major leagues.
  • The Mets and Yankees split two games at Citi Field last season.
