Roster Update: After just one game back in AAA, Tyler Holt has already been recalled. Ryan Raburn was placed on the 15 Day DL today with right wrist soreness to make room on the 25 man roster.
Player of the Game
Yan Gomes was involved with almost all of the Indians offense today including the first run for the Tribe. In the second, Gomes’ solo home run gave the Indians a little hope after falling down by five the inning prior. In his second at bat, he singled, then score along with Jason Kipnis on Zach Walters RBI single. In his third at bat, he was involved in an even greater scoring situation. He singled, then scored along with Jason Kipnis on a Tyler Holt double that gave the Indians the lead.
Feathers Up
After giving up five runs before recording an out in the first, Trevor Bauer retired the next 14 batters including four via the strike out. This turned what could have been a zero IP, five ER outing into a 4.2 IP, four hit, two walk, five run game, which while still unimpressive, is much better. After dropping five in the first, Bauer was around until it was a one run game and arguably could have pitched at least one more inning.
The Indians slowly put four runs back on the board after dropping five in the first, but it was Tyler Holt who had the killer blow in the sixth. Yan Gomes and Lonnie Chisenhall each singled with one out to start the inning, then the rookie outfielder came through with his first career extra base hit. Holt now has a four game hitting streak that spans all his starts as a Major Leaguer. He scored on the next play, a single by Michael Bourn.
Terry Francona used his bullpen to its full extent tonight with seven different pitchers facing at least one batter and only Josh Tomlin excluded from the action. Scott Atchison, Marc Rzepczynski, C.C. Lee, Nick Hagadone and Bryan Shaw all earned holds while Kyle Crockett took the win and Cody Allen the save. Between them, they allowed just four hits and didn’t walk any or allow any runs through 4.1 innings, keeping the game within reach for the Indians offense.
Feathers Down
Bauer did give up five runs before a batter was out and that put the Indians into a deep hole before they ever had a real chance to score. In the first, Danny Santana doubled, Brian Dozier walked, Joe Mauer doubled, Kennys Vargas and Oswaldo Arcia brought the rest home with a three run home run. For once, the scoring was all at fault of the pitching as none of the hits were anywhere near a position player. This ended a streak of seven straight spectacular starts by Indians pitchers.
Final Score: Cleveland Indians 7 – Minnesota Twins 5
On Deck: The Indians and Twins will play again tomorrow with T.J. House facing Ricky Nolasco at 8:10 PM.
