8/21 Recap: Carrasco K’s 11, Tribe Wins

Roster Update: The Indians purchased Michael Choice from the Rangers today for cash. A .188 MLB hitter used sparingly across three seasons, Choice was the Athletics first round pick in 2010 and is under team control through the 2020 season. The 25 year old outfielder is a career .279/.363/.463 hitter in the minor leagues and will report to Columbus.

Player of the Game

Carlos Carrasco has been nothing but dominant, taking Player of the Game honors in each of his last 5 starts. Tonight, Carrasco pitched 6.2 strong innings, striking out 11 Yankees hitters and walking just one. He limited New York to just one run and the Tribe offense provided him with enough run support to get him the win.

Feathers Up

When he isn’t bunting, Francisco Lindor can be as exciting as any player in the Indians lineup and thanks to a two out situation, that happened today in the third. Jose Ramirez hit a one out triple to set up the play and was kept at third with Jason Kipnis grounded out to first. Swinging wildly, Lindor quickly fell down to 1-2, but he was able to collect himself, foul a pitch off, take a ball low and then line a Masahiro Tanaka splitter to left to bring home Ramirez for the first run of the game. He came through in a similar situation two innings later as well, when he was safe on a ground ball up the middle that Brendan Ryan misplayed into a run.

Carlos Santana took advantage of the short right field fence at Yankee Stadium with a line drive, solo shot to lead off the 6th inning. The Indians continued on to add another run in the 7th when Jose Ramirez scored after a string of hits and walks.

A 9th inning rally widened the gap after the Yankees pulled within one run in the 8th. Ramirez, Kipnis, Brantley, Santana, and Sands combined to give the Indians 3 more runs, which gave Allen a 4 run lead going into the bottom of the 9th.

Milestone Alert: Cody Allen‘s four out save was his 51st career save, tying him with Joe Borowski for 7th most in Indians history. His 25 in a single season tie him with Chris Perez (2013) and Danys Baez (2003) for 14th most in Indians history, one more than he had in 2014.

Feathers Down

Once Carlos Carrasco departed, the Yankee bats woke up. A combined 3 singles off of Kyle Crockett and Zach McAllister contributed to a New York run in the 8th inning. Additionally, to make matters worse, Jose Ramirez extended the inning when he failed to make a routine play, which should have been out number 3. This unearned run brought the Yankees within one run and forced Cody Allen into the game for the 4 out save.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians  7 – New York Yankees 3

On Deck: The Indians get to see the Yankees top rookie pitcher again this time around as Luis Severino will pitch against Danny Salazar tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. This is the third game of the four game series.
