8/22 Recap: Jittery Salazar Settles Down Too Late

Player of the Game

Continuing his success in non-bunting situations, Francisco Lindor‘s first inning home run gave the Indians the early lead, then his eighth inning double allowed the Indians to score their only other run on a Lonnie Chisenhall single. He added a single in between for his third career three hits game. It was, however, his first game with multiple extra base hits as he notched his sixth home run and tenth double in first 60 games.

Feathers Up

It’s possible nerves got to Danny Salazar early on, it was his first start ever in Yankee Stadium and just his second ever against New York, but after two innings, he was able to calm down and provide enough for the Indians to get into the fifth. The most glaring evidence of tension was his error on an attempted double play ball in the second, but after he struck out Brian McCann to end that inning, he allowed just two hits (one should have been called an error on Mike Aviles) and struck out five.

Feathers Down

Salazar’s streak of allowing less than two runs per game ended abruptly at five today as a Brett Gardner‘s two run shot in the first put the Yankees ahead ahead 2-1 before an out was recorded in the bottom of the inning. After one out, Brian McCann added another solo shot to right to increase his runs allowed to three, a number he hadn’t hit since he allowed three runs in six innings against Milwaukee on July 21st.

The Indians had to deal with one of the worst calls made by an umpire this season today in the third inning. Jason Kipnis walked and Francisco Lindor singled him to third with one out. Michael Brantley hit a ball to first and Greg Bird threw to second for the force out. The throw pulled Didi Gregorious completely off the bag, yet Lindor was called out and the play was deemed not review-able by the umpiring crew because they said he was in the “neighborhood” of second base. On replay it was obvious that he only left the base because of the poor throw and that he physically wouldn’t be able to have caught the ball and stood on the base at the same time. Rather than go to replay, they chose to simply argue with Terry Francona, leading to his ultimate ejection.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians 2  – New York Yankees 6

On Deck: The Indians and Yankees will finish up their season series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM in New York. The pitching match-up should be interesting to say the least as Trevor Bauer will go against C.C. Sabathia.
