Steen Signs Four-Year Deal

The free agency period kicked off yesterday and for the most part the Blues remained quiet. The only major news to break from the club involved Alex Steen, who signed a new four-year contract extension. Steen had a year to remember last season, scoring 24 goals and providing the bulk of the offense late in the year. The 26-year old ended the 2009-10 season with 47 points, a new career-high.

Steen often provided the best pace on the ice, flying along the boards and causing mayhem for the opposition in their own end. His hard work later earned him a spot on the power-play where he scored seven goals.

Reaction: Steen could easily be named the team’s MVP in 2009-10, and it’s great to see him returning and in the club’s plans moving forward. The finer details of the contract, such as what the hit to the cap will be each year, has yet to be officially released. My one reservation is that the Blues may have paid too much for a fantastic few months, and could be regretting it a couple years from now. This is just a minor hesitation on my end, as I think Steen is a fantastic player with plenty of energy and skill to be a big difference maker on the ice. Let’s just hope his goal scoring ways don’t go the way of Brad Boyes.
