Roster Update: As expected, Jason Kipnis has been placed on the 15 day DL with right shoulder soreness. The severity of the injury is unknown, but we do know that he attempted to play through the pain for a few games (played DH on 7/31 and 8/1) and took one game off (8/2) before resigning himself to the DL. In his place, Jose Ramirez has been promoted.

In addition, Kyle Crockett surpassed his ten day minimum in AAA since being sent down and has been recalled. To make room, Michael Roth was optioned back to AAA. Crockett is now the Indians only left handed pitcher.

Player of the Game

The Indians did most their scoring in the first tonight and Yan Gomes was responsible for the majority of it. His two run home run to deep center went 440 feet, the longest of his career. The long ball scored Michael Brantley from first and extended the Indians lead to 3-0 before the Angels came to bat.

Feathers Up

Michael Bourn stepped up in a big way again tonight, saving Corey Kluber from allowing a rare home runs in the first with a leaping grab. The shot to straight center initially looked like an easy fly as Bourn settled beneath it, but it kept carrying and would have left the field if not for Bourn’s interference.

Feathers Down

The Angels scored in the fifth of Kluber thanks to two straight batters reaching base after he had them down 0-2 with two outs. With a runner at second, Kluber hit David DeJesus, then Kole Calhoun singled just past Jose Ramirez at second for an RBI. It was Calhoun who was robbed by Bourn earlier in the game, but despite hitting a weak ground ball, it was this hit that scored the run. Mike Trout followed with a single of his own to bring the game within a run.

Kluber has been fantastic in almost every start since mid-May, but was far from it tonight. He lacked command at times and allowed ten hits  in 5.2 innings including a Connor Gillaspie two run home run in the sixth to give the Angels the lead. Kluber’s worst two starts since May have occurred in his last three appearances, allowing seven runs to the White Sox last week then five to LA tonight.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians 4  Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 5

On Deck: The Indians and Angels will be back at it again tomorrow at the same 10:05 PM starting time. For your enjoyment, two incredibly hot (statistically) pitchers will face off as Carlos Carrasco goes against Matt Shoemaker.
