Player of the Game
Danny Salazar only threw four innings, but was the only bright spot in a poor overall game by the Indians tonight. Salazar struck out eight and allowed just a single run to earn a POG score of 2.71.
Feathers Up
Milestone Alert: Asdrubal Cabrera took some pain for an RBI today, but it was worth it as his HBP with the bases loaded tied the game. It also was his 376th career RBI, moving him into a three way tie for 47th most in Indians history. He is now tied with Hall of Famer Elmer Flick and long time first baseman, George Stovall.
In other milestone news, Jason Giambi hit his 2,000th career hit in the ninth inning against a player that has been around almost as long as he has, Latroy Hawkins.
Feathers Down
Today wasn't Danny Salazar's best game of the year, but it wsan't his worst either. He allowed a solo home run as the only score allowed, but had issues with his command all game, walking two and leaving too many balls up in the strike zone. He still had his fast ball working for him, however, and struck out eight in four innings. He was pulled prior to the fifth due to a high pitch count (80) as the Indians are trying to limit his innings.
The Indians had limited scoring opportunities on the day, but they did have one really good one in the fourth that didn't amount to anything. Nick Swisher and Jason Kipnis started the inning off by reaching base, giving the Indians two runners on with nobody out. With the middle of the lineup coming to bat, Carlos Santana popped out on the infield and Jason Kubel struck out. By the time Asdrubal Cabrera ended the inning, any momentum gained by the start of the inning had been destroyed.
Scoreboard Watch: Kansas City won the game and the series against Detroit, allowing them to keep their distant playoff hopes alive. New York salvaged a game against the Red Sox, moving them to within a half game of the Indians and Orioles again. The Orioles lost today, but still won the series against the White Sox 3-1.
Final Score: Cleveland Indians 1 – New York Mets 2
