In what the New York Yankees can only hope results in the reverse of the Sports Illustrated cover jinx…Derek Jeter is on the cover of next month’s GQ.
Just in time for Opening Day.
In the piece, set to hit newsstands Tuesday, writer Seth Mnookin sat down with the shortstop and discusses his private life in the New York media fishbowl and what should be the captain’s final years in The Big Apple.
It’s a great read and, as you would suspect, more amazing than Jeter’s countdown to 3000 hits is the fact that he’s been able to keep his private life under wraps and off the front pages of the tabloids.
“Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I didn’t go out and have fun,” Jeter says to Mnookin. “But there’s been a lot of players that come to New York and get caught up in the lifestyle, and before you know it, they’re sent away to another team because it affected their performance. My number one priority was on the field. I’ve had fun. It’s not like I’ve never gone out; I’ve done a lot of things. But I’ve always kept sight of my number one priority.”
If you’re looking for dirt on Jeter…you’re not going to find it.
What you’ll find instead is a quality piece on a guy who, as described by Curt Schilling, “(has) shown up, played, and turned in a Hall of Fame career in the hardest environment in sports to do any/all of the above.”
