Not much news has come through on the Cardinals front in the past week.
Maybe that changes with the start of the annual MLB winter meetings this week. Maybe it doesn’t. But the lull prompted me to take a look around the NL Central and check in with what’s happening with the competition.
I’ll be blunt – not much.
Beyond the Joe Maddon surprise hire by the Cubs, most teams in the division have made some roster tweaks, but nothing that’s radically changing the heart of their rosters from 2014. A special shout out to the Brewers – they are especially committed to the ‘nah, that wasn’t a collapse’ narrative.
Let’s go around the Central:
Reds
- 14 year old reports that they’re interested in trading for LF Yoenis Cespedes.
- Joey Votto’s leg is (probably) doing better.
- Chris Heisey was traded to the LA Dodgers for P Matt Magill in hopes that he can help the Reds leaky bullpen. The wives did not like the trade.
Pirates
- A.J. Burnett is back with the Bucs.
- Ike Davis was traded for a bag of cash. The move seems to be popular in Oakland, where he is now playing. And there’s still a logjam of players a 1B.
- A .211 utility man pickup is being praised as a “smart move”.
Cubs
- They’re ready for the biggest off-season in years! Nevermind.
- Joe Maddon is the new skip.
- Jason Hammel couldn’t resist the lure of the North Side.
Brewers
- Um. Is this thing on? Check one, two. Check one, two.
- They acquired Adam Lind from the Blue Jays and he was promptly jailed for domestic stalking.
- And that’s the off-season for the Brewers.
