With the All-Star break right around the corner, many people are starting to look at some of the award races around baseball. One of the toughest awards to break down right now is the American league MVP race.
Mike Trout won it a year ago, and he is one of the candidates for sure in 2015. Can anyone dethrone the Los Angeles Angels superstar?
Right now, the biggest challenger for Trout might just be Prince Fielder of the Texas Rangers. He had a very disappointing 2014 campaign thanks to some injury issues, but he is now back and playing extremely well. He’s hitting just under .350 right now and he really isn’t sacrificing power to hit for more average. He has a very realistic chance of finishing with 25 home runs and around 100 RBI if you look at his current pace.
Chris Archer is another challenger, as he is the best pitcher in the game right now in the American League. He is one of the main reasons why Tampa Bay has been a surprise franchise this season. It is very difficult for a pitcher to win the MVP award, however, so he can’t afford a major drop off by any means.
Before Trout won the MVP award in 2014, Miguel Cabrera had won back-to-back awards for the Detroit Tigers. He was on pace to be a strong contender this year as well, but his recent injury could prevent him from really challenging. Any extended time on the disabled list is going to prevent anyone from putting up the numbers needed to take home the trophy.
That leaves back where we started with Mike Trout.
The outfielder is strongly considered to be the best player in baseball, and he’s trying to get the Angels back into the playoffs. He is probably the leader right now going into the All-Star break, but his numbers really don’t jump out compared to what he has already done. There’s something to be said for being so consistently great that people are not really all that impressed with him right now.
With that being said, if the voting took place today, Trout would likely win another MVP.
