MENDENHALL CENTER, LAS VEGAS, NV — The normally soft-spoken, perhaps reserved Klay Thompson went off the beaten path on Day One of USA Basketball’s Men’s National Team training on Monday.

A competitor who wears his basketball heart on his sleeve, Klay let his guard down a little, with the lack of any high-stakes battles on the court. This gave viewers some glimpses into his laid-back Southern California personality.

One YouTube commenter described the interview of Thompson as the “most lively” he had ever seen.

What started with fashion topics ended with collegiate alliances.

Thompson commented on salmon shorts, ribbed Golden State Warriors VP of PR, Raymond Ridder, for shopping at Rochester Big & Tall, defended California Pizza Kitchen (“CPK”), and showed off his Washington Cougar pride.

Here are some highlights:

“What’s up, bro? When’d you sneak in here? I like the salmon shorts, bro.”

“Have you seen seen Raymond’s style, bro? The guy shops at Big & Tall and he’s like five-foot-five, dude.”

“Don’t hate The CPK. CPK’s pretty good, man. They got good chicken.”

“You talking about the Warriors or the Olympic team? Probably Draymond (Green). He’s very extravagant in the way he dresses, very confident, but you gotta respect his style, man. He’s not afraid to do what he does.”

Compares his future Warriors role to Manu Ginobili.

“I’m really happy with what’s going on with Harrison (Barnes). We had an amazing four years together.”

“It’s so cool playing with all these dudes.”

“You based out of the Northwest? Go Cougs!…I hate the Dawgs, man. What kind of stupid question is that?”
