A new chapter for the NHL

Do you like outdoor hockey? How about the new version of the hockey World Cup? You have John Collins to thank for that and some of the other more recent innovations in the National Hockey League. There are a lot of negative things that you could say about the league, and particularly its governance, but there is no other league that has had as many fundamental changes to the game, or inventive new events or functions as the NHL, nor can any claim as many successes with their new offerings as the NHL. Collins gets so much of the credit.

If this sounds like a eulogy, it’s because Collins has decided to leave his post and go into a personal business venture. Undoubtedly, it will be a successful one. Really, Collins isn’t dead, there is no need for a eulogy, unless the positive momentum he helped engender slows down at all. If that happens, then we can think of pouring one out for what the NHL lost.

SCOREBOARD
Ottawa 7, Dallas 4 – Oh my. That’s a few goals, isn’t it? Outscoring the Cowboys, I believe.

Anaheim 5, Calgary 3 – Anaheim is a tough road outing for a young team like the Flames, what with the desire to go to DisneyLand and all.
