A New Face?

A New Face?

With Dennis Dixon joining the Eagles nest, the quarterback position is becoming more interesting by the moment. Dixonwas rumored to have been in talks with the Eagles and those rumors have come to have truth to them as Dixonjust recently agreed to terms on a two year contract with the birds.

Dixon will look to add even more uncertainty and dynamic playmaking ability to Kelly's innovative offense this upcoming season and one must question whether, or not, the new deal marks the last of the Eagles attempts to locate a QB for next season. Dixon is not as shifty or fast as Mike Vick but he isn't the big and tall pocket passer that Foles has shown to be either. So what does Dixon bring to the table? The answer, written in nothing but bold and capital letters is: COMPETITION.

Dixon played with Kelly in college and has a familiarity with his offense that Foles and Vick do not have. However, with Kelly in the midst of making minor adjustments to fit the personnel and Dixon playing on the Steelers the last few years, he will have some catching up to do as well. He was seen as a projection the Steelers and fans were intrigued with his ability to run when plays broke down. However, he is still a young play-caller and Eagles fans have seen enough of those to know that first impressions aren't as telling as you would sometimes like.

Last year's season is in the past. No one wants to remember what that kind of non-winning feeling feels like this up-coming season and nothing says "moving forward" like a good ol' fashioned open competition at every position with a new scheme change on both sides of the ball. Everyone's spot, which may or may not have been locked up for years in the Andy Reid era is up for grabs. Is this to say that Dixon can win the spot by outright beating Vick AND Foles? Why yes....... Yes it is. Besides, if he proves to be the best option, Kelly will not have any choice but to play him like he is the best option. The likelihood of something like that happening is almost........ Well, who knows? But, at least, Eagles brass is leaving no stone un-turned and no turtle on its back. Its time the Eagles found a QB and if the search is on, then let the competition commence!

Still, the idea that the Eagles felt like it was necessary to bring in another QB option, at this point, really doesn't tell us much of anything at all, since we already knew that competition is going to be the name of the game. However, the fact that this signing tells us nothing at all, yet still creates another level of competition and uncertainty to the 2013-2014 roster, means that Eagles fans are really going to see an all out race for the starting spot on the roster. Who knows, free agency is not far away either. Chip may not be finished with this roster by a long shot but we do know for sure what would happen if Chip did decide to add another Quarterback to the roster. He would compete.
