It will be a different scene when UConn hosts Villanova in the season opener at Rentschler Field later this fall. There will be new faces, new coaches and possibly… new uniforms?
When UConn released the following video of what seems to be part one of a short film series, there were questions of what it really meant. However, it hinted at changes coming in the equipment room. Watch for yourself and take what you make of it.
[vimeo 123986659 w=500 h=281]In other spring news, Bob Diaco spoke to the media following a practice and gave an update on the current quarterback contest between Bryant Shirreffs and Tim Boyle. The pair has been battling for the starter role this spring and it is becoming more clear on who is the front runner at this point.
Shirreffs and Boyle are the top two candidates for the job, but the Huskies have other options if something is to go south before the season ends. Freshman Tyler Davis has been part of the early competition and Diaco awaits two more quarterbacks coming this summer in walk-on freshman Brandon Bisack and JUCO transfer Garrett Anderson.
“We have two functional and exciting players coming in June that will continue to compete,” Diaco said at a press conference Thursday. “They’ll both be eligible to compete. One is a recruited walk-on from the state and the other is a junior college scholarship player. Neither of them would be what you consider a ‘camp arm’. These guys are legitimate guys that are going to come in and compete. They can do it. They can move offenses, they can move down the field and produce.”
The transfer product from NC State, Shirreffs, has taken the next step and has separated from the current group, according to Diaco.
“I would say that Bryant Shirreffs has separated big from Tim Boyle, whom both have separated from Tyler,” Diaco told the media. “The competition is still legitimately ongoing as it relates to Bryant and Tim.”
There won’t likely be a decision until later this summer, but knowing that Shirreffs is in the temporary lead over the returning Boyle is a surprising, but satisfying sign for big things to come from the dual-threat quarterback.
The two will likely be on opposite sides this Saturday at UConn’s spring game. It will be the first look at Shirreffs in game action since his freshman season at NC State , even if it’s just a simulation of a real game.
It will also be Frank Verducci’s first action as the new offensive coordinator. It may be just a scrimmage, but if there is anything out of the ordinary from previous years, I’ll be sure to get overly excited and write about some early overreactions in the coming weeks.
A (possible) new quarterback, a new offensive coordinator and perhaps new uniforms could give the Huskies a new look for 2015, both in apparel and on the scoreboard if the correct adjustments are made.
