A Random 1986 Cardinals Fight Annotated

4

YouTube knows me.

I forget what clip I was watching, but the video below was suggested to watch next.

The greatest baseball fight? Featuring the Cardinals?

Yes, please.

Some thoughts…

0:20 Al Hrabosky is on the call?! I can’t be 100% sure it’s him, but according to Wikipedia, he started broadcasting Cardinals games in 1985 (!), so it’s possible. Anyway, right off the tip, Al (probably) is calling the umpiring ‘absolutely ridiculous’. And then predicting that the umps would cause a fight.

He also said ‘if you’re going to hit someone, hit ’em’. I wish 1985 Al would come back to the booth.

1:42 I looked it up and the Cardinals ended up beating the Giants 10-7 in this game. I was curious, since as soon as the ball is an inch past Vince Coleman, the umpire is ejecting people, John Tudor is charging the mound from the base path and both dugouts are emptying.

That was a live ball, no?

2:29 Herzog, baby. He’s just getting started.

3:07 Ricky Horton can’t get up from an arm bar. He must not have been a wrestler in high school. Al even comments on how long he was pinned to the turf. Mr. Horton can’t like this video.

3:42 Cardinals fans start a ‘Whitey’ chant after he goes at a player. Perfect. If a manager got into a fight with a player on the field in 2015, the #hottakes would be amazing. Skip Bayless would call for the death penalty.

4:29 The umpires are ejecting the STLPD from the field. I had no idea that umps superseded police in a stadium. That’s some real authority.

5:04 Vince Coleman is so hot, he has to be literally carried off the field by his teammates.

8:14 Chris Brown ‘wanted some action’ according to Al. He gets some ‘liquid’ tossed on him by a fan. Looks like Chris Brown hasn’t been a good name choice for longer than I thought.

10:19 ZIP RZEPPA cuts in out of nowhere! And he’s got highlights of another huge brawl! Baseball was pretty awesome in the mid 80’s, looks like.

+++++

That was an enjoyable 12 minutes.
