The Pirates are not going to win the NL Central this year. They’re probably not going to finish .500. But they’re also not going to finish in last place and they’re pretty unlikely to earn a top-5 pick at this point, so there’s no use in hoping they tank to get another super-high draft pick next year. With all those things in mind all I really want from the Pirates down the stretch is for them to not be so embarrassing on the field.
James McDonald gets the start at PNC tonight as the Pirates try to waste the bad taste of Miller Park out of their mouths while the Cardinals do their best to stay in the NL Central race with the streaking Brewers trying to pull away. The Cardinals were the team that started this Pirate tailspin by taking two of three from the Bucs at PNC back towards the end of July, and they’ll counter with Jake Westbrook tonight.
First pitch is at 7:05. Like most of you, I’ll have one eye on the game and one eye on the draft pick signing news.
