Brewers’ GM Doug Melvin should take a look at two closers available:
From ’06-’08:
Closer A:
12-7, 81 saves in 91 opportunities (89%), 1.95 ERA, 245 K’s over 189.67 IP=11.6 K/9, 0.91 WHIP
Closer B:
7-13, 118 saves in 134 opportunities (88%), 2.88 ERA, 140 K’s over 165.67 IP=7.6 K/9, 1.04 WHIP
The first one is Takashi Saito, who will turn 39 in February and made $2 million last year; the second is Trevor Hoffman, who turned 41 last October and made $7.5 million last year.
Saito is also an unrestricted free agent, and went 4-4, 2.49, with 18 saves last year, while Hoffman was 3-6, 3.77, but had 30 saves. The Dodgers, apparently, are only looking at the saves stat, thinking that Hoffman will somehow be better than Saito in 2009.
Both closers have comparable stats, but Hoffman has the reputation and the experience…still, if the Dodgers get the veteran Hoffman, let’s hope that signing closes the door on Saito returning to L.A.–and opens a door for him in Milwaukee.
